Filmprogramma: The White Crow

Ralph Fiennes

Elegant and loving portrait of the idiosyncratic and driven ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev. He defected to the West in 1961 when he was in Paris for a tour. Directed by Ralph Fiennes.

He was a white raven, this dancer born in Siberia. Extraordinary and by no means humble. Coming from an extremely poor family, he pursued a career at the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) determined to become the best in the world. At the end of the tour he defied the KGB by staying in Paris, endangering his family in Russia. Nureyev lifted the male role of the dancer to another level, entirely equal with that of the ballerinas. The regard and status of the male dancer in the history of ballet was changed forever by his efforts.

For his third film, the director and actor Ralph Fiennes chose a form constructed like dance: from the past to the present time and back, circling each other in Nureyev’s life. The focus is on his intense longing for freedom, both artistically and in his personal life.

Ralph Fiennes, UK, France, 2018, 127 min., Russian, English & French with Dutch subtitles. With Oleg Ivenko, Ralph Fiennes, Louis Hofmann, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Sergei Polunin.
