Choreographer, theater maker and artistic director of Theater Rotterdam Alida Dors will this year recite both the State of the Theater (1 September, during the Dutch Theater Festival) and the State of Dutch Dance (30 September, during the Nederlandse Dansdagen). She is the first person in history to be responsible for both States, bringing the two art disciplines theater and dance closer together.

About the States
Traditionally, the Dutch Theater Festival opens the new theater season with De Staat van het Theater, in which prominent figures from the cultural field share their view of the Dutch theater climate. Every year during the Nederlandse Dansdagen, the State of Dutch Dance is nominated by a person with a leading role in the Dutch dance world. The fact that Alida Dors pronounces both States is a powerful statement, with which she wants to question and break open existing traditions and conventions. She moves right through the rules of the sector, without caring about boundaries between disciplines. The Nederlands Theater Festival and the Nederlandse Dansdagen see and support this development.
Tobias Kokkelmans, director of the Netherlands Theater Festival:
“We are more than proud that Alida Dors will provide the State of the Theater this year. As artistic director of Theater Rotterdam and coming from the world of dance, she and her teammates storm the world of theater. As a bridge between these two worlds, she is a true advocate of limitless performing arts. We are therefore very pleased that we can share her perspective in a unique collaboration with the Nederlandse Dansdagen.”
Ronald Wintjens, director of Nederlandse Dansdagen:
“A voice is there to be heard...especially if that voice is called Alida Dors.”
Alida Dors: “That both festivals give me this invitation is a great challenge. They consciously made this choice together, and I am free in form and text to do what I think best suits my message. They convinced me with that. I pick up the mic, because...my silence will not protect me...you...or us!"
About Alida Dors
Alida Dors is one of the pioneers of hip-hop dance in the Netherlands. By working at the intersection of text, dance, performance and music, she has built up a good national and international reputation and a solid network as a theater maker and choreographer.
With her work Alida creates adventurous interdisciplinary dance chronicles with influences from hip-hop and modern dance – socially and politically aware, urgent and relevant. Alida questions the norm in the established theater and dance world. She represents a generation of leaders who cherish its roots and cultural baggage and take it with them in everything she does. As a maker and artistic director of Theater Rotterdam, she strives
to polyphony, and she actively works to break down the partitions between audiences, makers and disciplines.
This autumn, two performances by Alida Dors can be seen. From Tuesday, August 30 to Sunday, September 4, Theater Rotterdam will open the new season with Track: R.I.O.T., and from November 9 the performance Primisi will play in Theater Rotterdam and on tour through the Netherlands.
About the Dutch Theater Festival and the Dutch Dance Days
The Nederlands Theater Festival (September 1 to 11) shows the most beautiful performances of the past season, selected by the Dutch Toneeljury.
