For Kathrin (b 1979), dance is a means of exploring her personal experiences. A way to feel connected and express herself in all her vulnerability through her art. Also issues that connect challenges, setbacks and loneliness. She calls to feel the recognition, explore the conflict and keep moving. With each performance, Kathrin aspires to find a common soul, which by daring to be small can awaken great themes and heroes in us.
Kathrin Gramelsberger is a choreographer and dancer of Nigerian-German descent. She has developed her own language consisting of a mix of dance, music and spoken word. She draws inspiration from her bicultural background. Kathrin creates and produces projects both within her own foundation - Bühnenbiest - and for other companies such as Danstheater Aya and 2turvenhoog.
Gramelsberger works with target groups and takes her dance projects to unusual places. The performance OYA WOEST WEZEN (10+), a performance about the Orisha, played at the Rijksmuseum during the slavery exhibition. And for a tour of primary schools in Curaçao, Kathrin created OYA KRIATURA RAZU - the Curaçao sister of OYA WOEST WEZEN. At Dance Theatre Aya, Kathrin choreographed the solo performances TINTEN. Which has already played more than 300 times in high school classrooms throughout the Netherlands since 2020. This performance on the theme of racism and discrimination sparked many important conversations. With her latest duet LIJF, which will also tour the Netherlands in classrooms, Kathrin aims to discuss sexual discrimination and institutional sexism. After a two-month social residency at 2turvenhoog, she will create a performance on the theme of "home" for small children.
